75th anniversary stories

On this day in 1949, the St John nursing home (later to become the St John Hospital) was opened at Albyn Place, Aberdeen.

As part of our 75th anniversary, we're sharing stories from over the years about the impact we've had on individuals and communities across Scotland. From the 1950s to the 1990s, St John Scotland volunteers built and ran several care homes and sheltered housing accommodations for older people. Here, St John Scotland volunteer Iain tells us about the St John Court flats in Hyndland, Glasgow, where he and other volunteers went the extra mile to improve residents' quality of life.

This Mother's Day, as part of our 75th anniversary celebrations, we're celebrating a pair of special St John Scotland volunteers who are mother and daughter!

This International Women’s Day we want to recognise and celebrate all the women volunteers who have been part of the St John Scotland family since we were founded in 1947.  As we mark our 75th anniversary this year, we’ve been looking back on the difference St John Scotland has made to individuals and communities over the years, and we owe an enormous debt to our women volunteers for their contribution.

St John Scotland is celebrating 75 years of service.  Founded in 1947, as Scotland was emerging from the Second World War, St John Scotland was established to help the sick and vulnerable, and provide services not yet readily available on the fledgling NHS.
